Reading local group
We meet every second Wednesday of the month at RISC in London Street.
Next event: Meeting Wed 13th August 2008 - RISC 8pm. All welcome!
Rob Wilson, MP for Reading East on Climate Change
Rob Wilson (MP for Reading East) contributed with a written statement to the
public meeting on Climate Change on June 24th 2006.
The full text of Rob Wilson's statement.
We welcome in particular Rob Wilson's comments on decentralised energy. Implementation of combined heat and power plants in any new developments in Reading could make these far more sustainable.
Since Rob Wilson's last comment on Climate Change (see below) it is great to see that he now fully supports an enforceable Climate Change Bill requiring a 3% year-on-year reduction in CO2 emisssions.
John Redwood, MP for Wokingham on Climate Change
Rob Wilson (MP for Reading East) contributed with a written statement to the
public meeting on Climate Change on June 24th 2006.
The full text of John Redwood's statement.
This statement from John Redwood is somewhat disappointing. Comments like
We would like to see a much stronger support from John Redwood to a Climate Change Bill rather than just a vague reference to the Conservative Policy. Also how are we to understand John Redwood's support for public transport when he has also recently made comments about how bus lanes should allow cars in them to let more traffic trough?
Rob Wilson, MP for Reading East on Palm Oil and Corporate Responsibility
Palm Oil is a vegetable oil that is present in one in 10 products in the supermarkets. In Indonesia its farming is the most significant cause of rainforest desctruction.
In the full text and the associated replies of Rob Wilson's letter from the minister of State for Trade and Industry, Alun Michael, you can read both Rob Wilson position on this and the policy of the government.
We say:
- Company law must be changed to minimise the environmental and social damage of UK business.
- Companies must stop buying palm oil from destructive sources immediately.
While the words in Rob Wilson's letter are encouraging the belief in that companies will behave themselves with a bit of encouragement seems misplaced. At the moment the law states that company directors have to act solely in the interest of the share holders; this is wrong and should be changed to include requirements on social end environmental respnsibility as well.
Have we got you interested in campaigning on this? The first step can then be to email the Government to take action. You can read more about the Friends of the Earth campaign on Palm Oil and its connection to the campaign on corporate responsibility.
Rob Wilson, MP for Reading East on Climate Change
Rob Wilson (MP for Reading East) outlines in a letter to one of his constituents his position on Climate Change. Read it and you will see we need to do much more to convice our politicians about required action on Climate Change.
The full text of Rob Wilson's letter.
A great pity that he just talks about past Conservative glories and doesn't outline what future initiatives he will fight for. Some good suggestions would be:
- Support for the Climate Change Bill that requires a year on year reduction in Climate Change emissions of 3%.
- Taxation on aviation to make the price of flying reflect its environmental impact.
- Legal requirements on car manufactures to make more fuel efficient cars. Simple encouragements as mentioned in the letter has been in place for years and have proven not to work.
- A stop to road expansion projects that induce additional traffic.
Martin Salter, MP for Reading West on Climate Change
Martin Salter(MP for Reading East) outlines in his letters on 11 October 2005 and 28 April 2006 to one of his constituents his position on Climate Change. Originally Martine Salter did not sign the early day motion for the Climate Change bill but has now done so. He emphasises the Labour governments policy on reduction of CO2 emissions by 20% in 20012 compared to the 1990 level. But he reality is not in line with policy. Among other things the governments current policy on airport expansion will wipe out any other emission savings.
The full text of Martin Salter's letters.
Martin Salter has recently indicated that he is in support on taxing aviation to curb the expansion of cheap flights. This is a step in the right direction and he needs to put this argument forward with a much stronger voice.
