The Big Ask 2005
![]() |
A poll of Reading residents shows that 99 per cent of local people think the Government should do more to combat climate change. Reading FoE conducted the informal poll in Broad Street on Saturday 11th June, asking "Is the Government doing enough about climate change?" Out of 258 replies, 248 replied 'No', 9 'Don't Know' and only one 'Yes'. |
Based on this we will ask Martin Salter, MP for Reading West and Rob Wilson, MP for Reading East to support the campaign.
Broad Street shoppers were greeted by a penguin evicted from Antarctica by Climate Change. They could also pass on messages directly to Martin Salter by writing on a life size profile of him.
The poll is part of Friends of the Earth's new national campaign, "The Big Ask". The campaign calls on the Government to bring in a new law which will tackle climate change by setting legally binding targets to cut carbon dioxide emissions. Over the summer ads for the campaign will run on screen 7 at the VUE cinema in the Oracle.
Curb urban 4x4
On Saturday June 4th Reading FOE joined forces with Berkshire Greenpeace to protest against the explosion in the number of 4x4s on urban roads. These vehicles use vast amounts of fuel and are almost never used for their real purpose. The campaign took place outside Lancaster in Reading who is a dealer for Range Rover the most petrol guzzling of any 4x4 in the UK.
South East Plan consultation
The South East plan will affect the development of housing, the environment and all related issues in the wider South East region for the next many years to come. Together with all other environmental groups we have to provide as much input as possible to the process to ensure a sustainable future. See the March 2005 newsletter for details.
Recycling of batteries
A long campaign to get Reading started on battery recycling has succeeded. The council will from spring 2005 start to collect used household batteries at the council building and the civic amenity site for recycling. Now we just need to get them to increase the collection spaces. This is now in place as seen from this [4]newspaper article.
Reading Green Day
The Reading Green day was a get together of nearly all green groups in Reading where we exchanged ideas and advertised ourselves to the public. We ran a very successful quiz that tested how sustainable your lifestyle is. See the March 2005 newsletter for details.
Stop ESSO
We have together with Greenpeace and People & Planet in Reading held protests at ESSO petrol stations around Reading with the aim of making the public taking their business elsewhere. ESSO is targeted as they have persistently refused to take climate change seriously and has supported programmes to downplay the threats to our world.
Thames Valley Multi Modal Study
The Thames Valley MMS was a project instigated by the government to develop a strategy for transport in the Thames Valley over the next many years. In Reading FOE we took active part in the consultation and provided many suggestions that eventually had an influence on the final report that puts very strong emphasis on curbing the growth in private car use and promoting public transport.
GM free Reading council
This campaign has been a long programme to make Reading join the number of councils in the UK that can declare themselves GM-free. The aim is that everything that is within the councils direct control (like school meals) will not contain GMO. Lobbying of councillors and working within the Green City Forum seems slowly to bring results.
